Rowing on the Ganges river at Varanasi is much more difficult these days. When I made this photograph, back in 2018, almost all the other boats were also human-propelled. Even in the very thick fog this meant that the risks were low because everyone was just meandering around quite slowly. These days that very same stretch of river is like a motorway, with the vast majority of the boats being much larger and propelled much faster by their engines. The row boats today have to hug the shoreline for fear of being hit.
