The app for independent voices

I absolutely love travelling on India’s railway system, but it can definitely be a little stressful at times. On the morning I made this photograph, at Delhi Cantt station, I had been tracking our early morning train and set off a little later than planned because it was, apparently, delayed. About halfway to the station, in our beaten-up old cab, we hit an impossible traffic jam at exactly the same time as my app showed that the train was, now, actually on time. We urged the driver to get to the station as fast as possible, discovered that he couldn’t even get close to the station because of the ubiquitous yellow police barriers, and trotted the final few minutes on foot to, of course, the furthest platform in the station. Sweaty and stressed we reached the platform in the nick of time, only to find out that the train was delayed about about an hour after all.

At least I had plenty of time for some photography and to wander back along the platform to buy two cups of perfectly spiced chai from the official Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation kiosk to chase away the dawn chill.
