The app for independent voices

This article had a different title…

When I pitched the idea to Tri Mag, a few months back, the idea was:

"The Case of the Disappearing Independent Iron-Distance Triathlon." 🔍

We're talking independent 140.6 races, the same distance triathletes know and love, but under a grassroots, local banner.

And they're almost extinct.

Great Floridan. Gone.

Bear Lake Brawl. No full being offered in 2026.

Michigan Titanium. Last year for the full in 2026.

Peasantman. One of the only ones left.

You can count on one hand the number of independent iron-distance triathlons here in the US.

And there's a number of reasons why. Changing athlete priorities, rising operational costs, dwindling volunteers, logistical challenges, etc.

I had a chance to sit down with the Race Directors for Bear Lake, Michigan Titanium, and Peasantman to talk about the challenges associated with putting on this distance triathlon in this day and age.

Many thanks to Jon, Joe M., Steve, and Joe C. for the candid conversation!

And remember, all of their races have many other distances available so remember to support your local triathlons!
