On Hypocrisy, the Misuse of Religion, and the Importance of Truth:
Even people who call themselves devout Christians and followers of Jesus are capable of highly immoral behavior and the worst crimes.
Of course, it's debatable whether people who commit profoundly evil acts are Christians. Those in positions of power within religious organizations, in particular, often are not. Many misuse religion to disguise themselves and manipulate genuine believers. These are the so-called wolves in sheep's clothing.
But even people with good intentions can behave in a profoundly malicious way. In fact, most atrocities and crimes are committed by people who genuinely mean well and are convinced they are doing the right thing. In my experience, this applies equally to atheists and believers. Belief in a just God and the fear of being punished by him are by no means a guarantee of ethically/morally correct behavior.
This is primarily because many people have never learned to think critically and truly independently. Ethical principles and a moral compass cannot simply be adopted; they must be developed through personal experience. The foundation for strong critical thinking skills is the constant questioning without regard for authority or what is supposedly self-evident. Those who haven't learned this are extremely vulnerable to manipulation and exploitation.
Religion has always been misused to manipulate and control people. Of course, there are also people who have found their way to faith independently. These are usually people who have gone through phases of intense doubt or who completely rejected religion. This means they haven't simply accepted their religious beliefs unquestioningly. They recognize the hypocrisy and abuse of power inherent in all religions. Someone who uncritically submits to a religion cannot truly distinguish between good and evil, is easily manipulated and exploited, and will therefore regularly participate in clearly immoral acts.
