I’ve heard it the past few months from every member of my immediate family, I’ve heard it from nearby friends and colleagues, I’ve heard it from those far away geographically, and my daughter has confirmed it as well on her college campus. I definitely feel it in my bones, too, right now. …Seems like a LOT of us this season has a bad case of the “don’t want to”s.
We see the tasks on our lists, the things we must do, the responsibilities. We even acknowledge that much of the time we enjoy our jobs. And yet… there it is: the looming case of dontwantto-itis. It is causing us to look askance at our to-do lists and piles of things waiting for our processing, and to then instead be distracted by our longing to curl up in a chair with a warm mug of something and read a book. To watch the extended version of LoTR. To bake cookies and bread. To sit on the deck chair and watch the birds in the morning. To putter in the garden. Alas.
I know the default blame is the season—it’s autumn! It’s the cozy season! Of course we don’t want to do hard things. But it feels stronger this year than usual. I’m hearing it everywhere, for whatever reason.
…How about you? Anyone else have a case of the “don’t want to”s right now? I’m curious.
