I'm re-reading To Kill a Mockingbird for my class, after quite a few years away from it, and one thing I'm learning that I simply didn't notice when I was younger was HOW GREAT A DAD Atticus Finch was. His quiet contemplation, the whitespace in his words, his even-keeled volume, his humble determination and conviction to do what's right through his career while shielding his children from the immensity of it all... I've cried more from Atticus this go-round than I ever did reading Mockingbird when I was younger. There are so many layers of greatness to this beloved book, and one of them is Atticus' parenting model. It's not perfect, and it's a product of the era. But glory be, is he a wise, stoic, determined, loving father. What a model.
