It is always a special treat when I am commissioned to draw a bird with which I am not familiar. Before settling on the final drawing, I have the pleasure of spending time with my new subject to get acquainted with their unique shapes and proportions. This week it’s the snail kite, a glorious devourer of apple snails in the Everglades, who will soon fly across this original 1893 Florida map.
