“I know that God never dies.” But which god? The hummingbird is the uncanny symbol of Huitzilopochtli, who sips the nectar (blood) of blooming flowers (slain human bodies). The old gods always lurk just beneath the surface in Mexico— one reason I’m in love with this joyfully macabre country.
