You can't white-knuckle a habit that's covering for something underneath it.

I cut my drinking by roughly 75% without once setting rules about weeknights or counting drinks. The life underneath the habit changed first.

The need for it shrank until the habit itself went with it.

The drinking was managing pain I hadn't dealt with. When the wound finally started closing, the anesthetic wasn't necessary anymore.

Fix the thing the drinking is medicating. The habit will follow.
