Did you know that “variety” and “varietal” are not technically interchangeable?
“Variety” is a reference to the type of grape. A vineyard is planted with a specific variety. Examples include Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc.
“Varietal” refers to a type of wine made from a specific variety of grape. This is typically what you will see written on the label, particularly with new world wines.
