wanna quickly drop some notes from a conversation earlier before i forget:
Inspiration. I think 'inspiration' as a concept has, over the years, been pedestalized in a way that makes it kinda unhelpful, or inert. people associate it with grimace-grinning motivational speakers and grandiose orchestral music. but i think there's a more earthy reality to it. To be inspired is to breathe, to take in. We could get more dramatic about it but the thing I’m focused on is like… we’re kinda looking for a little inspiration in almost everything we do, really. We hope for it when we go to events or parties, when we read books, when we meet friends, even just going for a walk, or watching a tv show, there’s some latent hope for something magical to happen, something that moves us, shakes something up inside us, gets us stimulated and eager to move in turn. And… I think speaking too openly about the desire to be inspired can almost seem a little crass, maybe? gotta workshop this a little more. But it seems to be something best done somewhat obliquely. And yet I feel it ought to be done, because a lot of people are struggling without inspiration, and worse, without even the realization that they’re feeling uninspired. Again I don’t mean to be like, bouncing-off-the-walls manic, but even just quietly humming with animating spirit, I think is the goal.
Stories. We are all storytellers whether we realize it or not, and how tragic it is that there are people who are miserable and suicidal because they don’t have a story to inhabit, and how people who seek to control others, control their frames, control their stories. our sense of who we are, what we’re about, what we do, where we’re going. Here we got to talking about how… when people feel some kind of performance anxiety (to be put on the spot ‘onstage’ to tell stories for eg), they tend to tunnel-vision. They narrow down their concept of what a story is and start feeling like they gotta do a TED talk or a Disney movie or something. But we actually naturally tell stories all the time just in casual speech. it’s just easy to forget when there’s pressure.
in a chaotic and noisy ever-changing world, it can be a public service to show up consistently in a predictable way
ugh there was more but i’m sleepy lol oh well this is it for now
