Can you truly love God while ignoring the poor?

That question sounds extreme, but Scripture does not treat this lightly. Your response to the poor reveals something deeper.

Proverbs 14:31 says when you honor the poor, you honor God. But when you oppress them, you insult Him.

This means that caring for the poor is personal to God.

Jesus takes it even further. He speaks as if feeding the hungry and helping the hurting is done directly to Him.

Not metaphorically, but personally. “As you did it to one of the least… you did it to Me.” (Matthew 25:40)

We cannot separate “loving God” from “helping people.”

James shares that even if you see a need but only respond with words, that type of faith is dead. (James 2:15–17)

So the question is not, “Do I love God?” It is, “Does my life actually show it?”
