In Lenin’s Tomb, David Remnick tells how someone once lamented to Vyacheslav Molotov how much better things might’ve been had Lenin survived, delaying the horrors of his successor.

This sounds sensible to most Americans today, but Molotov, one of the few people to ever intimately know both Lenin and Stalin, scoffed at the notion.

“Compared to Lenin,“ he said. “Stalin was a lamb.”

Lenin wasn’t “complicated.” He was evil. Full stop.

We don’t say that enough in the United States because most people never actually learn what he did and others with “intellectual” mentors, parents or grandparents can’t let themselves admit they had a warm heart for the man who ushered in the new age of true totalitarianism quite intenti…
