Abu Azrael—infamously known as "The Angel of Death"—has officially touched down in Tehran.
Born Ayoub Falih Hassan al-Rubaie in 1978, the former university lecturer and Taekwondo champion is no stranger to asymmetrical warfare. His militant trajectory began with the Mahdi Army fighting US forces during the 2003 invasion of Iraq. He later cemented his brutal reputation as a fearsome commander within the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF), battling ISIS across Syria and Iraq.
Now, the father of five is reportedly in Iran, actively coordinating with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) to draw up contingency plans for a potential US ground invasion. The veteran commander who fought the Americans two decades ago is back on the board, echoing his signature catchphrase: "Illa tahin"—"Grind you to dust."
My Take: The United States has struck directly at the heart of the Shia Ummah. Rather than fracturing these networks, the strikes have served as a powerful catalyst, effectively uniting disparate Shia forces into a consolidated front against the US.
