​🇺🇸 Pain at the Pump: U.S. Energy Inflation Spikes

​If your wallet is feeling significantly lighter after filling up your tank, you aren't imagining it. The March CPI report is out, and the numbers are startling:

  • Energy inflation exploded +10.9% month-over-month. That is the biggest single-month shock to the system since September 2005.

  • Gasoline alone jumped 21.2%. Headline inflation has pushed back up to 3.3% year-over-year, and it is being almost entirely driven by these surging fuel costs.

​However, before we assume broad inflation is roaring back everywhere, look closely at the data. Core Inflation—which strips out those highly volatile food and energy prices—is actually sitting much cooler at 2.6%.

​The runaway price hikes aren't hitting the entire economy, but right now, pump prices are absolutely screaming.
