These frequent rains this late in the year in certain areas of South Africa, to the extent that they do not cause any damage to grain and oilseed crops that are now at maturing stages, are a welcome development in improving soil moisture ahead of the 2026-27 season. The next season may be a challenging one, given the expected return of an El Niño and a drought in Southern Africa.
