Coach — think back to the times in your life when you've learnt something and retained it.

Chances are it was in one or a combination of these situations:

  1. It was fun learning it.

  2. You were learning it with your friends and enjoying learning with them.

  3. You had a problem and you needed to learn something new or figure out how to solve it.

In other words — when your own learning was most effective, you were having fun, learning with friends and solving problems.

So here's my question:

Why do you try to get kids to learn by showing them the "perfect" technique and having them repeat it hundreds of times until they get it "perfect"?

If they're not having fun...

If they're not learning with their friends...

If it's not solving a problem that's relevant to them...

It's like the old saying about teaching a pig to sing: you'll only annoy the pig and frustrate yourself.

The best learning happens when it's fun, social and meaningful.

How are you making learning about fun, friends and problem solving?
