I was invited on a podcast this week.
The host asked a question I'd never been asked before: "What has 30 years in sport taught you?"
For a moment I was stumped.
Then it hit me like a thunderbolt.
"It's taught me to be humble, understanding and more accepting of people's views."
My answer surprised even me.
I continued; in what felt like a stripped bare moment of honest, public self-reflection.
"For the first ten years in this business, I thought I had all the answers. Everyone else was wrong. I was; to be blunt; a bit of a dick."
"Then after failing several times; including at the highest level of sport; and spending time with coaches, athletes and families all over the world, listening to their struggles, watching their journeys, I realised NO ONE has all the answers. Least of all me."
Life is about three things:
Never stop learning
Help as many people as you can; so they can help others
Respect that everyone is on a journey
After hundreds of podcasts, someone finally asked a question that really mattered.
What has your time in sport taught you?
