After a brief reprieve, winter is back in Extreme Northern Florida, where temps will struggle into the 40s this afternoon ahead of a bitterly cold and breezy night with lows in the lower 20s. The National Weather Service has issued the rarely-seen Extreme Cold Warning for the overnight hours into Tuesday morning (along with Freeze Warnings) for the areas in royal blue, including Tallahassee. Extreme Cold Warnings are issued for the Panhandle when the wind chill is expected to be 15F or below, so bundle up tomorrow morning. Areas south and east of Tallahassee are under Cold Weather Advisories and Freeze Warnings.
Unusually cold weather will continue for at least another week, with the coldest days potentially over the weekend or early next week-- a night or two with widespread lows in the teens would not be a surprise in North Florida. As far as snow/ice risks for Florida, they appear minimal at the moment, with the dip in the northern jet stream possibly being too deep to favor much if any precipitation during the cold snap. However, there's a lot of energy in the subtropical jet stream, so it can't be ruled out completely, and further north the U.S. East Coast should watch for another potential Nor'easter next weekend. Bon hiver!
