The real House of Balloons was a rundown party house at 65 Spencer Avenue in Toronto, where The Weeknd lived from 2010 to 2011 and where much of the mixtape’s sound and stories came from daily life inside its rooms.

Most of the project was recorded between bedrooms and small makeshift studios with Doc McKinney, Illangelo, and early collaborator Jeremy Rose shaping the production.
