There are quite a few cures going back many years for different types of cancer and much progress so that many more are surviving much longer due to scientific advances and breakthroughs. But there are still major challenges with the main killers such as pancreatic cancer, brain cancer, cholangiocarcinoma, endometrial cancer, advanced lung, colon, prostate, breast or ovarian cancer among others. And in some cases or cancer types where a majority may either be cured or enjoy a prolongation of life with quality, there are still those who don’t respond to treatments or any benefit doesn’t last long. That’s part of the complexity and the need to keep learning through research. There is no substitute for government support of science but of course important to collaborate with stakeholders in the private sector.
In cancer research, breakthrough ideas don’t get tested without resources. We can’t build on existing knowledge and get to the next treatments and cures for diseases like Li-Fraumeni Syndrome (where p53 mutations are inherited and predispose to a very high risk of various cancers or multiple cancers in younger individuals) if ideas don’t…
