Very bizarre. I looked up some of the towns named- my hunch was that they would be primarily occupied by then-recent Portuguese immigrants, bringing over an old world superstition with them. That was not the case; these were all old New England villages. New England has a long history with vampires though so it makes sense that the lore would survive so late somewhere… and hey, maybe there was something to it after all.
