"How many of us have been disappointed by someone in whom we had placed so much trust and love?

To be human is to have other people disappoint us (as we often do to others); yet to be human is have to take this risk for the joy and disappointment that goes along with it. And it is not sinful or less than human to feel sad and even abandoned by another at points in our life.

In fact, I would say, the only way to follow Jesus honestly is to take the risk of being open to others, to entering into relationships of communion in various ways throughout our lives—and to do this while knowing we may be disappointed and even abandoned. And experiencing these feelings of rejection doesn’t make us sinful or bad. They make us human and frail and weak—just like Jesus.”
