There are two requirements on being competent to judge the problem of evil. First, you need a sound mind, so you can think coherently and carefully about the complex issues. Second, you need to truly know suffering in a deep way. But satisfying the latter will often—I do NOT say ‘always’—destroy your ability to think coherently and carefully about the relevant issues. First-person experience is the only way to obtain deep knowledge of suffering; anyone who has truly suffered knows this perfectly well. Hence, few people are competent to judge the problem of evil.
