The UNAIDS report on global AIDS deaths was just released about a fortnight ago and showed no increase in global AIDS deaths. In fact, global deaths from AIDS continued its previous trend of slowly declining, falling from 600,000 → 570,000 annual deaths.
I don’t want to overstate this. We probably won’t have the full 2025 and 2026 death totals until 2027-2028. We don’t know how many people died, globally or in Africa specifically, in 2025 yet and credible data is going to lag 1-2 years behind at least. We’ll see what happens for TB, Malaria, and food insecurity deaths later this year.
But this article is stating projections on the impact of USAID cuts as if they are facts. They aren’t, and we’re just starting to get the real facts now. And it’s very possible that Trump and Musk will be vindicated.
