The number one job of any leader is to define reality first for themselves, then for their team.

If you can’t do that, leadership will become increasingly difficult for you.

“It’s not your fault, but it’s your problem.” I remember looking at him, like - What! These issues were here long before me. Typical response. I didn’t love the phrase at first. It felt a little cold, disconnected from the reality. But I understood it, because it was the reality. My new reality. And decades later, I found myself using the same phrase with leaders I was coaching, developing, and sometimes challenging.
