The first “Lesson” of Timothy Snyder’s “On Tyranny” — a book that quite recently became “required reading” for every American who believes in the Idea of America — is this:
“Do not obey in advance.”
The 8th, 10th, 11th, 13th, 15th, 18th, 19th and 20th Lessons are these:
“Stand out.”
“Believe in truth.”
“Investigate.”
“Practice corporeal politics.”
“Contribute to good causes.”
“Be calm when the unthinkable arrives.”
“Be a patriot.”
“Be as courageous as you can.”
All twenty lessons are good. But these nine especially cry out for a “principle of protest” that can be quiet or loud, but should persist, every day in every heart and every venue against tyranny.
For the foreseeable future, in the absence of due process of law for the alleged crimes of one single man in these United States, I propose the following “principle of protest” —
HOLD HIM ACCOUNTABLE.
The courts may not now do so — due to a ruling unfounded in fact, reason, law, or precedent, a ruling of our highest court of “law” — a ruling that perverted and perverts the course of justice for one single man in America.
The courts may not now hold DJT accountable for his criminal misconduct — past, present or future.
But we the people can. More than 74 million of us did already.
HOLD HIM ACCOUNTABLE.
