My beloved 1999 Saturn was on its last legs. I was worried every day about whether I could get to work or not.
Once an autumn or so, Nebraska gets thunderstorms on sunny days with northwest winds where the ground heats up underneath much colder air aloft. The warm parcels at the surface rise into the frigid air, accelerating upwards through the atmosphere. These days are fun to watch because the individual white clouds shine brightly against a blue sky. The rain is often very cold, and sometimes we get unforecast hail from these storms. When the sun sets, the storms die, because the surface air is no longer warm enough to support rising air.
I was happy to take a few pictures of such thunderstorms on November 1st, 2013 at the end of a year where I did not get many photos or stories. One storm that moved through the area in the late afternoon hours finished off with a spectacular double rainbow.
