While the Brooks Brothers founder’s grandson created the white button down shirt following an inspiring polo match in 1896, I have been a white button down shirt enthusiast for nearly as long. My forthcoming fashion essay collection features the garment so frequently — in which it has become a support style in times of crisis and a cape in moments of courage — that an alternate title could have been “Ode to the White Shirt.” (As the collection showcases far more fashion, it’s aptly titled “Clothes Minded.”)

I applaud the brand for not only bringing the best piece of clothing to life, but for showcasing Selma Blair, who is the epitome of grace as she demonstrates perseverance, and Lisa Birnbach, who wrote the preppy bible that remains dog-eared on my shelf since its release in 1980.
