This last day of fall, I am thinking about how I can be more accepting of the slowness of winter.
We resist this slowdown because capitalism has pressured us to remain productive. While I know this, it’s hard to unlearn what’s been drilled in me for decades. I turn to nature for guidance.
Cold is just as necessary as the sun. Poppy seeds and winter wheat won’t flower in the spring unless exposed to winter cold. Balmy winters lead to shorter tulips and hyacinths with smaller blooms.
We’ll talk about this and more at noon tomorrow EST, at the online Writing for the Seasons: Winter Solstice. How are you celebrating the return of the sun?
