Popular sci-fi lied to you: Space isn't actually "pitch black," and nebulae aren't glowing neon purple to the naked eye. If you stood in the middle of the Orion Nebula, it would look like a faint, greyish fog. The vibrant colors we see in JWST photos represent infrared data translated into the visible spectrum so we can actually interpret the chemistry. We donโt see the universe; we translate it. ๐๐
