Some films are great due to the depth of discussion they’re able to provoke and they shouldn’t be confused with films that are superficially provocative. One Battle After Another, Eddington, The Substance and Sinners are all films in recent memory that have achieved this. At a certain point, you have to recognise that a piece of art’s ability to inspire thoughtful reflection is an accolade in itself. It almost becomes futile to try and fight about whether they’re “good” films or not. They’re good, fam. Do you like it? Do you hate it? Can you articulate why? Are there things you didn’t get? Are there moments you loved? Are your feelings rooted in bias? Did the film challenge you? Did it comfort you?
