i’m not the first person to mention this but the ideological trajectory of the word woke is such a blatant example of cultural colonisation. In under a decade, a Black linguistic artefact was subsumed by the dominant culture, Mcdigested, then regurgitated back to us as a grotesque insult unrecognisable from its original form. We’ve watched a lexical cannibalism play out in real time.
