I used to focus my promotion pitches entirely on past accomplishments: "Here's what I delivered. Here's the impact I made." However, past performance only proves capability. It doesn't answer what decision-makers are actually asking: Why should we promote you NOW?
Make the case for what changes with the promotion:
✅ Are you being unintentionally excluded from critical conversations?
✅ Will you need to hire more senior team members?
✅ Does becoming peers with more senior leaders boost your effectiveness?
Remember: promotions are a reward for great work. It's a business decision about what the company gains by promoting you now versus in 6 months.
