Last year, the average life expectancy in Japan was 87.13 years for women and 81.09 years for men. Women ranked first in the world for the 40th consecutive year, while men ranked sixth.

Japan also has the longest ‘healthy life expectancy’ in the world, meaning the number of years we can live independently without needing care. Still, there is a gap of about 10 years between ‘life expectancy’ and ‘healthy life expectancy,’ and research to delay ageing continues.
