Isn’t it nearly impossible to find anything that is both solely for the artist and for the audience at the same time? Aren’t those at odds with each other? Otherwise wouldn’t director’s cut be synonymous with locked picture? I would argue the best films found the sweet spot between both the artist’s need to express something and the audience’s need to receive it due to creative collaboration where all sides fought for the best ideas and found the right balance, regardless of serving only the auteur vs only the audience.
