F1 is the second movie I’ve seen this year that directly took phones to task.
The first was Thunderbolts. There is a beautiful scene where Yelena (Florence Pugh) pours out her heart to her father, sharing the agony of isolation she experiences as she wastes the nights away in her phone. The answer, her father says, is to serve as a team.
In F1, Sonny Hayes (Brad Pitt) tells his younger counterpart that his phone is “just noise” - a distraction. The followers, the likes, the building of a social media brand don’t matter. The answer is the pursuit of excellence as a team.
These films don’t represent a spiritual revival, of course. But they represent a wisdom I can gladly get behind.
