Today’s the last day of my Substack Labor Day sale.
I’ve noticed an increase lately in folks complaining about me (and women generally) charging for our work. If you value feminist philosophy, activism, and thought, there are basically two options:
1. We can force women to contribute their thoughts to the movement as an afterthought to their myriad other daily obligations.
2. We can invest in feminist thinkers, and allow them to do this work full-time—just like male thinkers get to do.
This is my full-time job. Doing this work full-time means that I can think deeply and expansively about feminism, that I have the time to continuously expand my knowledge base and consult other experts, and that I’m not squeezing in activism in between a packed schedule of other, more pressing work. It means you get the best I have to offer you.
If you believe that we should invest in feminist writers and thinkers, then you need to know that our media landscape is an absolute hellscape, and there are basically only three ways to earn a living:
1. You can accept advertisements, which means you have to spend significant time hustling for marketers to take an interest in you. This gives advertisers significant control over your work, and can cause writers to self-censor.
2. You can rely on someone else to publish your work. Very likely, that entity is relying on advertisements, and will attempt to control the scope and direction of your work.
3. You can ask the people you love your work to pay a small fee, thereby collectively funding your work in an act of group solidarity.
I’ve gone with the third option, in addition to offering no-questions-asked scholarships to anyone who needs one.
It’s easy for people to complain when they see a paywall. I get it. Everything is expensive; we’re seeing more and more paywalls, and in an ideal world none of us would have to hustle to get paid. We don’t live in an ideal world. But we can make the world a better place by paying to support the writers and other creators who have improved our lives.
