For I long time, I was very self-conscious about my drawing style. Basically, I thought that it was too basic, too childish, too unskilled. Too much meh.
This feeling was particularly strong when I looked at the work of other artists on instagram. Looking at the work of ANY published children’s book illustrator, I felt inferior, as if I was a snail trying to race a cheetah.
So I decided that children’s books were not for me and I did other things.
But then something happened. I sent my stuff to a children’s book publisher and to my surprise, they jumped on it. This is what they said at our first meeting in person:
You know, we really like your style because it’s simple, it’s to the point and it doesn’t take ages to produce. We want to make three books a year and with your style, this cadence is possible.
So wait a minute. My style is good because it’s simple? Because I’m fast? Seeing my work through their eyes, this really changed everything.
