You wouldn't want all of the peons on the planet getting wise to their various rackets, but the internet finally made that possible, for the very first time in human history.
With the right way to present it, you could get almost the entire world population to "vote" on something, while knowing the facts, the history, the implications... THAT'S POWER!!
Ergo, the powers at be, cannot allow anything close to that level of unity coming to fruition, lest they lose control of the entire game.
