As we got to know one another better and I mentioned my Father having been a German soldier who had spent a lot of the war years in Russia and the Ukraine he opened up a bit about himself during that tumultuous time. According to him the arrival of the Germans was a celebratory affair in every Ukrainian City, Town, or rural setting. Bouquets of flowers were given to the German soldiers. Families where proud to billet and feed soldiers of the Wehrmacht whenever it was possible. We talked about many things including a notice as he said from the German military command that became posted on all Government Building doors that read in Ukrainian: ACHTUNG Anyone found imprisoning, molesting or killing a known Jewish person will be put in Prison at hard labour. Those who have Murdered will be shot and thei'r remains will not be returned to their families.
Of course all of this would be dealt with by a Military Tribunal ( German ) and thus dealt with fairly swiftly, especially during a war.

We talked about many things including a notice as he said from the German military command that became posted on all Government Building doors that read in Ukrainian: ACHTUNG Anyone found imprisoning, molesting or killing a known Jewish person will be put in Prison at hard labour. Those who have Murdered will be shot and thei'r remains will not be returned to their families.
Of course all of this would be dealt with by a Military Tribunal ( German ) and thus dealt with fairly swiftly, especially during a war.
Hatred of Jews ( Bolshevicks ) was rampant in the Ukraine and certainly not without cause. I believe that some Ukrainians took advantage of the Soviet forces being rolled back by the Wehrmacht and decided to deal with the Jews on their own otherwise this edict would never have come about.
The elder Ukrainian being around 50 to 60 years old at the time of our conversations and speaking fluid German was likely also a volunteer in the German Military on some level, or a collaborator. If that is the case then like Hunka he is a lucky man. My guess is that he escaped along the Baltic into the British occupied area in northern Germany bordering Denmark.
Lucky him, the British were more pragmatic and not into relentless Nazi hunting now that the war show was ending. Had he been captured by the US military which saw Nnnaaaaziiees in any thing that moved or not would doubtlessly have shipped him off to Soviet elimination administered slowly and painfully.
Anyhow I did commit to paper some of the conversations we had over a campfire on a get together, or at the kitchen table. He and his wife are of course both pushing daisys now.
