Any London-based Canon Club attendees looking to give Wagner a whirl can still buy tickets for the LPO’s concert staging of Götterdämmerung at the Royal Festival Hall on Saturday 27th April with an appropriate kick-off time of 3pm. The first act is exposition-heavy in parts but the second and third are tremendous with a suitably earth-shaking conclusion.

Welcome back. It's good that you weren't online because you were spared the insanely stupid Japan immigration discourse that coincided with your vacation. (No, Japan is not importing 800,000 Nigerians.)

We flew over Iranian airspace yesterday so I was more keeping an eye on that!

Terrible turbulence as well, although could have been worse.

Ed, as I also have a fear of flying, how did you deal with the turbulence? Any suggestions?

the most helpful advice I got was from a friend who explained it was best to look at it like a speedboat jumping up and down on the waves. It's unsettling, but it can't really do anything. My only advice is that it gets a bit easier each time but I still find it very unpleasant. you just have to remember that it doesnt last that long.

Many thanks, Ed. It's the most crippling fear I have and I don't exaggerate when I say it impacts my quality of life since I don't ever travel anymore.

How long does the turbulence typically last, do you think? My experience is 15 minutes or so, which feels like an hour.

usually less than that but yes it feels worse. A friend did go on a flying course and that helped him. Otherwise you can get Valium from a doctor? I wouldn't want to recommend a life of prescription drugs but if it helps. I've got it for flying before, although British doctors are very cautious about giving out drugs (correctly IMO) and I'm not sure the doses I took made much difference except as a psychological comfort.

there is that website which tells you how much turbulence you should expect on your flight but Im not sure how helpful it is unless cancelling is an option?

I recently read a family named Sackler made some narcotics that seem like they can help. Guaranteed to not be addictive! And we should always trust experts who stand to make fortunes if you follow their advice!

If only South Vietnam had stronger, less corrupt, and more internationally respectable civilian leadership. They may have actually "won".

I read Max Hastings book while there and yes their leadership did seem especially terrible.

The Vietnam War is certainly one of the most iconic events of "The Sixties", so I am looking forward to reading about how it was perceived in your country.

Did you know that the Australians and New Zealanders (as well as South Korea) actually sent troops to Vietnam as well?

It was also this conflict that popularized the peace symbol from its origins as semiphore for nuclear disarmament:

The Aussies were very well regarded from what I read.

Also I believe 30,000 (?) of your countermen volunteered, around the same number of Americans who headed north to avoid the draft.

In fairness to the Vietnam war, it did have the best soundtrack of any conflict ever.

As a young child, we had a female neighbour who volunteered for Vietnam. She has her old gun, but by law it has to be locked up in a certain corner of the house and subject to regular inspections. This isn't the land of the Second Amendment obviously!
