Ramping Up ... Poking and Probing ChatGPT
On the path to AGI, Loqui cum Chat (GPT-4): Quid est Intellectus?
Lots going on with the various successes and failures of assorted LLMs, GPTs, and other AI creatures. I work at exploring meaningful uses of these AI creatures. [per the Sage YODA: Do or do not. There is no try! Since hearing that, I avoid using the word try … either you’re all in or just faking].
In any case, what that means for me is exploring a little corner of OpenAI’s (paid version) ChatGPT-4. (henceforth Chat). I experiment with other AI creatures including perplexity, Phind, Groq, and Poe. I did experiment with Google’s and Microsoft’s unpaid tiers … but basically find myself gravitating to Chat. There are just not enough hours in the day.
I started playing with AI around half a century ago. I had a very privileged opportunity that I didn’t use as wisely as I could being a teenager. There was a summer I spent at NYU’s Courant Institute learning to program there CDC-6600. This involved around 4 hours of morning courses on Fortran and Assembly Language (COMPASS if my memory serves me), and then afternoons spent on keypunching various programs (for homework and for fun), and for me, a lot of time at the Math Library there. Of course hanging around the Village was glorious. In any case, while deeply impressed and engaged with computer programming, I didn’t fully appreciate the significant potential and opportunity given me for free. I did catch on later in life that I should pay a lot more attention to computing. That’s a story for another time.
What this post is about is my current activities in poking and probing Chat to a) better understand its potential, and b) explore specific areas to see how well it would assist me in revealing knowledge and ideas about areas of interest to me. As my first serious test of Chat, I decided to use David Deutsch’s post on X

"Understanding is one of the higher functions of the human mind and brain, and a unique one. Many other physical systems, such as animals’ brains, computers and other machines, can as- similate facts and act upon them. But at present we know of nothing that is capable of understanding an explanation – or of wanting one in the first place – other than a human mind."
and see where I could go with that. Basically, I engaged with Chat as a person I was conversing with, and then based on that conversation, follow up with more conversation. Ultimately, I chose to capture all these and organize these as an informal paper. Maybe someday it will morph into a more rigorous paper, right now, that would take more time than I have.
The coordinates for finding the paper are:
Chatting with Chat(GPT-4): Quid est Understanding?
