Negative Nancy says - “I can just record my course and ask people to pay for it instead of running a cohort-based training”
Me - Cohort-based training/learning will give a tangible touch to the training and keep people connected/accountable.
Negative Nancy says - “I don’t have time to run a cohort-based training for months together”
Me - Cohort-based training/learning can be as short as 4-6 hours as well usually spread across 2-3 weeks.
Negative Nancy says - “I still prefer to do my own video course on a topic. I would want to bet more on that”
Me - Video courses and cohort-based training courses are not mutually exclusive. You can convert your first recorded cohort training workshop/session into a static video course that can still give you money and an audience. It could be the other way round too. You can first create a video course and use that as a lead generator for cohort-based courses.
Deep-dive
Teach what you know but in groups.
The average price of cohort-based courses is always several times higher than the self-paced courses. Name it a boot camp, workshop, cohort-based courses, mastermind groups - all are nothing but learning together with a predefined timeline/schedule.
Cohort-based courses vs Self-paced courses - While self-paced courses are more towards passive learning and low engagement, cohort-based courses are more towards active learning and higher engagement and are often time-bound. By making things time-bound, the audience is forced to perform better with limited timelines.
With a group of people learning together, cohort-based courses bring in implicit accountability. Also, cohort-based training is not just video courses, sometimes they involve workshops, assignments, tasks, etc too to make it more interactive.
Some niches
NoCode Cohorts: The concept of no-code tools has been growing exponentially for the last couple of years and we have been seeing a lot of Enterprise customers too using NoCode tools. There are hundreds of no-code tools and there are hundreds of video courses to learn about these. Create a cohort-based course around ‘no-code’ tools and show people how they can build applications using these no-code tools. See 100DaysofNoCode as an example that received 7 figure acquisition offers.
Bubble Cohort-based courses: Bubble is another tool that has got a lot of growth in the last couple of years. It’s a no-code tool where users can pretty much build any application without actually writing code. Companies started looking for Bubble developers and this has led more people to learn Bubble courses. Many productized companies started to serve Bubble based requirements. The Bubble has become a much bigger ecosystem by itself where people have been creating Bubble templates, Bubble Apps, and selling to others. But Bubble also comes with its own learning curve. Create a Cohort based learning where you teach people how to build apps using Bubble. At the end of the course, also show pointers on how people can look for Bubble related outsourcing work or jobs related to the Bubble ecosystem. Show users a way to make money using the Bubble ecosystem or to get a job with Bubble skills. BuildingWithBubble makes $5K - $7K MRR with Bubble courses.
Notion Cohort: Notion has almost become a go-to tool for all companies. There is a much bigger ecosystem growing around Notion. People are making thousands of dollars by selling Notion-related tools, Notion form builder’s Notion based website builder, Notion based headless CMS APIs, etc. For example, Potion makes more than $5K MRR by building tools around Notion. NotionMastery makes $42K per month by teaching about Notion. Super is making 12K MRR just by connecting Notion docs to a custom domain with fonts and analytics. All this in 6months since the launch. Note that there is a high growth of Notion usage with almost every company trying to use Notion. Many PMs, Engineering managers started using Notion. Create cohort-based learning for Notion users where you teach tools around Notion and its ecosystem. See the growth of ‘Notion’ searches. There are 2,240K searches for a month for 'the keyword ‘Notion’ and that’s huge.
Content Writing Cohorts: Though writing seems easy for most people, the ‘habit of writing isn’t easy. That is where cohort-based writing courses can help you stick to a schedule and commit. By committing with other learners in the cohorts, you feel accountable and make others accountable. Create an ecosystem for writers. You can further segment these under various categories like ‘ebook writers’, ‘content writers’ etc. Ship30For30 in a similar niche hascrossed $500,000 in total revenue in under 12 months with cohort-based courses for writing. To make courses like these successfully, create an inbuilt community where people can support each other. For example, every time a post is written, people can share it with the community to get some visibility and feedback at the same time.
