Thank you for all your kind comments. Helen is very touched by your concern. To clarify, yes, we have offered to replace the alarm (and provide other equipment) but Helen has politely but firmly said no :)

I also understand the desire to link to petitions, but maybe just the once - and for anyone wanting to sign a petition could we point you towards our own which currently has over 68000 signatures and will form the basis for our push for a Proper Ban on Hunting: https://protectthewild.org.uk/our-campaigns/proper-ban-on-hunting/

Charlie Moores, just an idea, but have you and PTW considered starting this petition on the official government parliament petitions website at all? The reason why I ask is because on the government petitions website, on the page where it states "how petitions work", it says down the bottom: "Petitions started on other websites

The Committee will only consider, and the Government is only obliged to respond to, petitions which people have started on the UK Government and Parliament petitions website. The Committee will not consider petitions hosted on external websites." The link is here: https://petition.parliament.uk/help

I have already signed your petition for bringing in the "hunting with mammals bill" and would very happily sign this on the official government parliament petitions website too!

Hi Cara. Thanks for the question. We've posted petitions on the government site that reached over 100k but were shot down in the ensuing so-called 'debate' (I went to a handful of those debates in 22/23 and in no case were the changes asked for actioned by MPs). When we launched our Proper Ban petition we knew the same would happen IF it reached 100k because the current government will never move on hunting. We decided that it would be better to focus our efforts and give people better access to the information on our own site. When campaigns are run all orgs will quote the the number of signatures their petition gets and we don't honestly believe that it has much consequence where that petition is hosted.

Thank you for replying to and answering my question Charlie Moores. Yes, that does all make sense as I myself, have read many debates on multiple petitions on the government petitions website that I signed, many eitner related to banning or helping to ban/make hunting harder to do and/or other animal welfare matters, but even if the MPs agreed on an outcome, (which you are very rightly correct in saying that many of them are either pro hunt (so naturally anti against the petition to begin with) or don't ask for exactly what the petition is asking for) the situation and what the petition is asking for often gets left there and forgotten about going forward. I have already signed PTW's petition for bringing in and implementing the "hunting with mammals bill" and I wish you the best of luck with this. Please carry on spreading the truth and carrying on the great work that you are doing! You have my full support all the way!

Apologies for the repetition Charlie, I hold my hand up to that! The reason for doing so is because I was asked by someone on here previously to put the information at the top of comments as not everyone reads all the way through, but of course it doesn't work like that so I contacted everyone the only way I could. Won't do it again, sorry (blush)!

Rosemary, you're one of the most thoughtful (and regular) commenters on here - I figured that was what you were doing and I should have added a smiley emoji as I didn't mean to sound scolding. My turn to apologise :)

Yet another abuse of power by the police instigated by sadists who have political influence. I hope Helen soon recovers from her ordeal. I also hope those officers involved feel ashamed of their actions. It's always striking that the police can outnumber and bully the vulnerable, yet are unable and unwilling to prosecute those that find joy in illegally torturing animals. The police are corrupt and immoral.

Did the police stop and search every single person in the area as they could all reasonably have been thought to be carrying personal alarms ? (Thought not) If only women were searched it could amount to sex discrimination. Police forces all around the country promote their use, especially to females. This is also important regarding the number of serving officers committing sexual offences against females, even when on duty. On record that death threats made = personal alarm is the least that's needed. Hope the theft of the alarm is investigated fully and prosecutions brought.

Freedom Of Information/Subject Access Requests needed.

Hope Helen is ok.

*Shrek photo terrifying !!

Policing around hunts is just a joke as is proved time and time again. That photo of a hunt supporter is truly scary, you can see the in- breeding! I wish all the sadist perverts would drop dead.

What a flimsy pretext for singling out a person at a public event.

I would file an official complaint - and escalate it if need be.

As for that Curre and Llangibby "hunt thug" goon: what a despicable excuse of a 'man'.

You couldn't make this up! Helen you have been extremely brave and shrewd about this. I hope you have recovered from the ordeal, and use any anger positively to pressure the police and get this information spread as widely as possible! Thanks to PTW for offering Helen the face to face back up, not surprised the police are avoiding that one! When you consider how the sabs/ monitors suffer personal attacks in the field, they NEED personal alarms! If an alarm was used during an attack, would the hunt be so quick to report the alarm then?

How ironic! The brave police force are very keen to do a stop and search on an innocent 70 year old woman but very reluctant to stop and search aggressive young men who are knifing each other and other innocent people to death, on a regular, heartbreaking , basis .

Oh my...it beggars belief. Poor Helen. What the hell is happening here..Police, what are you doing for goodness sake. Are the pro hunt supporters more likely to be criminals when breaking the animal cruelty acts against our wildlife. These people are not well, they were born without feelings. To want to commit horrific acts against little animals is strange....grown men doing such a thing...ruining the countryside at all levels.

To think that any police force is benign & seeks only to protect ordinary people is unfortunately naive. This whole incident, along with others at Boxing Day parades, is blatant intimidation of people going about lawful protest, something this government seems to want to squash, through their minions. The next lot getting in will be no better. You have to ask why the police are so slow in investigating hunt thugs that intimidate people that go to 'watch' hunts & save animals that are being illegally hunted. You have to ask if there is a hidden agenda, not that we'd ever find out. I witnessed something similar in Lewes on Boxing Day & I wrote to complain to the local Crime Commissioner but I'm not holding my breath for a reply.

This is a very disturbing incident and must have been intimidating for Helen. Unfortunately, this is the Country/World we’re all living in these days, where peaceful protest is being criminalised. The real “criminals” are the hunters but seem protected by police. Correct me if I’m wrong but wasn’t Fox Hunting with hounds outlawed in the early 2000’s? I hope Helen is ok and this experience hasn’t shaken her too much. Being stopped by the police is not a pleasant experience no matter what the reason, ask any motorist. What is happening to our society??

Expand full comment

I'm shocked to the core! Just can't believe that Helen has been singled out and spoken to about having a legal personal alarm on her (even though it had been stolen but I bet that hasn't been investigated??) These barbaric thugs and animal killers have got to be stopped! I hope brave Helen is o.k and thank you PTW for all the info.

The chap now incharge of the post office is none other than the idiot that was in charge of the covid app. He plays to replace all of the post offices delivery vehicles with EV's by 2030/5. This would financially bankrupt the post office, but no one seems to care & the scanner over the imprisoned postmasters postmistress, deaths & suicides is another financial headache, though we'll deserving considering what they did to these people.

How can possession of a legal personal alarm at any occasion be grounds for a stop and search?

PTW do we have funds enough to replace Helen's personal alarm please? Possibly even 2 in case the next one is stolen! She is clearly targeted and needs one!

Having known Helen for many years - and have met members of her lovely family - I am flabbergasted at her awful “stop and search” experience. As a law abiding citizens (as we both are) I would have been terrified and humiliated on the streets.

I am out a lot on my own - on streets and countryside - and regularly carry a personal alarm - my former employer even provided us with them. Does this put me at risk of being searched? I shudder to think. ….

So sorry Helen was subjected to this dreadfully frightening ordeal. Tell her we are all thinking of her.

Best not to carry anything incriminating and to make sure folk with you can video any hint or actual assault saying that went out locally on my own today with spray, just in case the hunt happened my way but didn't, 78 Years old but had with me a walking stick!!
