3) The smoke in the air is wreaking havoc with my lungs (I'm asthmatic). I've gone back to wearing a mask anytime that I'm anywhere other than in an air-conditioned building. It's not foolproof, but it does help somewhat.

Samuelson and Atkin nail it here, and the cover of the NY Post blaming Canada is priceless. I don't think I've seen New York freak out like this since Hurricane Sandy, and Sandy changed many things in the media and in the upper reaches of power, ie Michael Bloomberg. All of a sudden it wasn't just those picturesque Cajuns experiencing hurricanes, climate change was real, and now it isn't just those Californians getting smoked out. (There's always been a certain East Coast jealousy as Californian became the largest and most important state, innovation, philanthropy, social media, and all that--a digression to be sure, even for HOT GLOBE!) We're all in this together, all the states, all the countries, on this one beautiful earth. And really, one can talk carbon sinks, air travel, bogus solutions like nuclear and carbon-capture, even forest fires and the Amazon, but it all comes down to stopping fossil fuels. That's why HEATED is so great. They don't shirk from the obvious. And they keep the pressure on.xa

We absolutely need to blame Canada. As a resident of MI, we are fighting a Canadian fossil fuel company, Enbridge, and their current illegal transfer of oil and gas through the expired-easement Line 5, with complete support of Canada's energy ministers and the Royal Bank of Canada. Please blame Canada. Their Canadian government is not fighting fossil fuel buildout in Michigan (or Wisconsin) in 2023--far from it. Fossil fuel buildout is supported at many levels: government, corporate, and banking.
Are you kidding? Absolutely blame Canada. Canada is the 4th largest exporter of crude oil in the world and 98% of that crude oil is Tar Sands. BLAME CANADA.

When I read through all the comments here this morning, I realised that our Heated community could benefit from the brilliant, if poignantly and devastatingly harsh, focus on ALL who are affected by the scourges of fast heating world -- https://www.sarahchayes.org/post/dirge. What really scares me is the people who think that forces within Canada are intentionally starting fires just to advance an environmentally conscious agenda. That's quite a risk to lives and property to prove a point, no?
Great article, and having to deal with this and with asthma and not feeling well, absolutely sucks. When a similar event happened in 2020 in the Bay Area, it was surreal.
And I don't know if you saw this, but kinda related, two large insurance companies are no longer offering coverage largely in part because of the wildfires.
This reality where insurers don't stop coverage, or a least very heavily raise rates, for fossil fuels that cause and worsen climate change which worsens events like wildfires, while dropping coverage for the people who have to deal with the result of those decisions, is just absurd.
I'm in west Michigan and haven't seen much of this "orange haze" - yet. But I lived in central Florida in the '90's, when wildfires were rampant, so I have a good idea of what it's like. I lived on the narrow strip of land between the Atlantic Ocean and the Intracoastal Waterway in Ormond Beach, and every morning when walking to my car the air would be thick with smoke and flakes of ash falling all around. This went on for what seemed like weeks (I don't recall the exact time frame).
And just so we're clear, let me remind everyone that the '90's were THIRTY years ago! I'm 70 years old right now, and if we experience today what I witnessed 30 years ago, I would be forced to stay indoors. You're right - we don't often experience the consequences of our own lifestyles, so perhaps this will be a wakeup call for some of us.
Or not. Sadly, it's far too easy to flip the channel to some brand-name "news" figure explaining to all of us that there is nothing to worry about, that we can continue to spew carbon into the atmosphere all we choose, and those pansy-ass snowflakes that tell us otherwise are lying so they can line their pockets with government grants for more studies. These people wouldn't admit to global warming if they were dying from asthma - like the tragic case of men & women a few years ago who vigorously denied the existence of Covid as they were gasping their last breaths, dying from the disease they were certain didn't exist because some jackass on TV told them it didn't.
