Many of us will soon be packing our bags for overnight stays with friends and family during our summer travels. While a candle or some sweets are always welcome, the three finds in this week’s edition take it up another notch.
This edition was originally published on October 10, 2022. Enjoy!
Being welcomed into someone’s home—no matter how well you know them—is a very intimate thing. They’re allowing you into their private sanctuary, letting you see where they let their hair down, put their feet up and become their truest selves. You start to learn more about them the moment you step through the front door, which is why you should never step through that door empty-handed.
The three picks featured this week all make excellent gifts for an overnight or weekend visit. They all show careful consideration for your host or hostess’ taste and will likely get you invited back.
Just don’t overstay your welcome (see below). As Benjamin Franklin once said, “Guests, like fish, begin to smell after three days.”
1. Soapsmith Brick Lane Collection (£7 and up)
Soaps and lotions are pretty classic host/hostess gifts. How I like to make it more personal is by choosing a brand that relates specifically to my host, or my relationship with them. It could be a brand or fragrance inspired by the city where we met or something that reminds me of home that I want to share with them. I first encountered Soapsmith’s products at my salon and the amber, pepper and sandalwood fragrance remains a favorite. Launched by Samantha Jameson in 2012, the brand has six signature scents as well as limited editions inspired by the UK capital.
2. Vivienne Westwood Catwalk Coffee Table Book (£55)
A coffee table book is always a good idea, especially for all the fashion lovers out there. Not only are they a way to pay homage to a designer you know they love, but they also double as home decor items. This coffee table book about legendary British designer, the late Vivienne Westwood, looks just as good closed as it does open and is filled with colorful images and insider details. Any fan of this punk icon will love revisiting her best fashion week moments and learning the stories behind her signature pieces and looks.
3. OYOY Mizu Coupes (2 for £33.99)
Buying home decor items to give as gifts can be tricky. You need to know your host’s personal style, which can be hard if you’ve not spent much (or any) time in their home before. When in doubt, go for something classic and simple. I’ve always loved coupes for champagne or cocktails, and I like the minimal, modern design of these from OYOY Living Design (a brand featured in the very first edition of MIDDI). Pick up a pair for the couple hosting you and add the matching carafe for a more complete drinks set.
