A lot of what you write seems to be about deepening life, which in my experience naturally extends it, but also decreases the need for any guarantees about its length. You seem on track to be able to look back at your life, well before it’s over, and feel that you’ve given and received more than anyone could ask for. That’s an incredible feeling.

Thanks for your comment here Rick. I love the idea you wrote so succinctly that deepening your life decreases the need for guarantees about its length. I absolutely agree. I don’t think this gets nearly enough attention in the longevity industry where instead everyone is fixated solely on how to live longer (guess you can’t make as much money off someone living a fulfilled life?). I certainly couldn’t ask for much else, it’s all a bonus from here.

I've thought about this post several times over the last couple days. Like you, death is something I've thought and think about quite a bit. I loved reading your reflections.

I'm curious to know if you go on to learn CPR/first aid, both of which I used to teach. Happy to chat with you about it further. Just yesterday, our EMS captain posted a WhatsApp to our department saying 3 of our EMTs had brought back a pulse in a woman in cardiac arrest, and she's now in the hospital, breathing on her own—a rare, but wonderful thing.

Thankful, as always, for your thought-provoking posts.

You, Rob, are someone I deeply respect and admire because of the EMS work you do (among other things). Saving life or helping others meet with death in all of it's unpredictable and chaotic forms is some of the most challenging yet important jobs there is. Makes me really glad to hear you enjoyed this post. Absolutely, I will follow up when I look at taking the course. To hold myself accountable here I found the list of eligible trainers in Toronto (https://www.wsib.ca/en/providers-approved-deliver-emergency-and-standard-first-aid). Budget is currently tight for a handful of reasons but will hopefully be able to find one at minimal cost.

That is wonderful to hear. Peter Attia has quipped his medical school experience in which his professor stated that the first sign of ASCVD/heart disease is sudden death. So it's lovely to hear that people like you and your team are out there saving lives... that family will be eternally grateful for the brave work of those EMTs.

Thanks so much for your comment, it's always great to hear from you. (P.S. Miche and I were looking to start back on biweekly calls in early March... zero pressure but let me know if you're interested).

Great piece Jack. It’s interesting to see how death has been top of mind for you in your writing - as your life has been more vital and alive - especially since leaving work.

Just a friend - I loved your summary of everything you’ve done in the past year in that middle section. Could be a lifetime but for you it was a year.

Thanks Tommy boy, always appreciate hearing your thoughts on my writing. Love how you summarized that: with death on my mind my life has been more vital than ever… looking back at the last two years, I guess that’s true. Pretty lucky to be in a situation where I was able to live a lifetime in a year, but it was not without a conscious pursuit of that which makes me feel most alive.
