The hard fork terminology pre-dates cryptocurrency by decades - it's been a term in common usage among programmers since at least the 1980s. A fork is when you take a copy of an existing thing as a starting point instead of restarting from scratch. A hard fork means that the two things cannot share anything going forward. It's commonly associated with process creation in Unix systems (the fork system call) and the creation of projects in the open source community (Chrome's blink rendering engine being a fork of Safari's webkit engine for example).

And for what its worth, do you have a Pocket Cast upload? Your links are exclusively to the podcast platforms I avoid.

just subscribed to Hard Fork on Apple podcast. Interesting to find out there are already ~3k reviews dedicated to an old podcast named Sway that your new podcast is taking over from. Among them a few people complained they automatically became the new podcast's subscribers without consent. Not really an unusual way of account operation IMO (I've seen youtube/twitter accounts doing the same thing), and I guess this is probably NYT's own decision instead of creating a new podcast or no?
