Wow, that is an extraordinary perspective, shocking even, haven't come across that before, thank you for the insight and clarity, explains so much. Gratitude.

Having reluctantly holstered my gat, I do appreciate this post. It's so refreshing to hear an agent talk about the opaque world of publishing with such frankness and honesty, and it helps to remind would-be authors that there's a lot more going on than we can ever perceive from the outside. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

I've enjoyed immensely every one of Ivan's posts, but this one especially -- good God it's time we got some simple candor, eh? The closing two paragraphs are so delightfully honest, I had to highlight them and forward the whole damn thing to a few writer friends of mine. Keep it coming.

It’s great to know the reality of it…setting expectations goes a long way to mitigating disappointment. A tough industry indeed. Am very grateful I’ve got such a fabulous agent!

Of course it’s sad you no longer have time to reply to queries as the “naïve” ingénue once did, but entirely understandable. It’s cool that you find time to give us your backstory and forensic examination of the biz. Those of us trudging through the query trenches appreciate it.

Your blog's are superb, Ivan. A counterpoint to the terrified guess work of over thinking writers and the avoiding of the hard truths by other less direct agents! Refreshing. I LOVE it.
